Quote #1 “But the rest of the family at least Elsa and Trudy, weren’t as friendly”, Margaret Rose, Pg.50
Significance: I chose this quote from the book because in this quote Margaret Rose talks about how Elsa and Trudy were to her family. I choose this quote because it talks about how Americans treated the characters in this book. Trudy was born and raised in the US so that is why I think she was really mean to Margaret Rose’s family unlike Uncle Patrick who was warm and welcoming.
Character Judgment: I think Elsa is really mean and unwelcoming. I think Elsa is a lit bit nice in front of Uncle Patrick but she is mean when she talks to Trudy bad things about Margaret Rose’s family.
Question: Was Trudy the oldest sister?
Quote #2 “Ma had made it for me just a few months before we left. In Limerick she was a seamstress for a fancy shop on O’Connell Street, and they had paid her only a small fraction of what they sold the dresses for” Margaret Rose, Pg.52
Significance: I chose this quote because it says what Margaret Rose’s mom use to do in her home country. She was a seamstress. I thought it wasn’t fair that the owners of the fancy shop paid Margaret Rose’s mom only a small fraction of what they sold the dresses for.
Character Judgment: I think Margaret Rose’s mom is really responsible. I think she is a hard worker because she always is cleaning and washing the dishes in Elsa’s house. I think she is really nice because even though she knows that Elsa talks bad things about them she still acts friendly and with good manners.
Question: Was being a seamstress the only thing that Margaret Rose’s mom did back in Limerick?

Field Trip Reflection
Part I: From Haven to Home
The purpose of the From Haven to Home exhibit was to examine 350 Years of Jewish Life in America. The exhibition examines the Jewish experience in the United States through the prisms of "Haven" and "Home." "Haven” expresses the ideals of freedom that have come to represent the promise of America. This section also explores the formative experiences of Jewish immigrants as they struggled to become American. "Home" section focuses on the opportunities and challenges essential in a free society and the uniquely American Jewish religious movements, institutions, and associations created in response. In the From Haven to Home exhibit I learn a lot of things. For example, I learned that the Underground Railroad was meant for Jews. I also learned that the Touro Synagogue opened in 1763. The Jeshat Israel Synagogue renamed Touro Synagogue in the nineteenth century. The Touro Synagogue is the nation’s oldest standing synagogue and national monument. Also, I learn that in the 1930 American Jews idolized Hank Greenberg, the first Jewish baseball superstar. I learned that in early America, Jews lived in “Synagogue Communities” one congregation in each community that provided for each Jewish Community member’s spiritual and ritual requirements and provided charity in the time of need. I learned that much of American Jewish culture derives from the Yiddish play wrights, actors, poets, and writers who came to America between 1887 and 1924. I found interesting that Judah Benjamin became a secretary of state for the Confederacy. He was the first Jew in a presidential cabinet. I also found interesting that American Jewry divided over the issue of slavery. Those in the North generally opposed it. In the South Jews sided with their fellow white citizens. When the Civil War came in 1861 approximately 9,000 Jews fought for the Union and 3,000 for the Confederacy. Another thing that I found sad and interesting was that about 6 million Jews died at Nazi hands in the Holocaust. I learned a lot in the From Haven to Home exhibit.
Part II: Children of Immigrants
1. Photograph: The photograph that stroke me was the Walt Disney Magnet School Chicago 1998. This picture had a lot of kids that had different races and that where from different places, cultures and had different ages. I chose this photograph because it was stroke me seeing all those kids together even though they were different in many ways.
2. Quote: The quote that I chose was “America has anything we need: technology, goods. At least one person from every nation lives here. People immigrate to America because they know it’s a land of freedom and a better life. I see America as a land of opportunities.” I chose this quote because it strokes me how Tamara Farnick talked about America and what she thought about America. I think what she says about America is really true because I also think America is a land of opportunities and I do think there is at least one person from every nation that lives here. Something that really interests me from this quote was when Tamara said that America is a land of freedom because in the first amendment it talks about freedom and I think we probably have more freedom than other countries.
3. Personal Essay: The personal essay that interest me and that I could relate to was the Living in this New World personal essay by Giovanna Diaz. At the beginning of Giovanna’s personal essay she says that when she came to America for her parents it meant coming to the land of opportunity I can relate to that because when I came to America for my parents it also meant coming to the land of opportunity. Also Giovanna says that her parents have always worked very hard for her family and I can relate to that because my parents have also always worked very hard for our family. Something that interested me was when Giovanna said in her personal essay “Our skins, countries and language differences makes us a great country. We live in a country where people have many hopes in the future and are all learning to live together, accepting the differences of skin, countries and language.” I was interested by these sentences because she says that our differences makes us a great country and that every day we learn to put our differences aside. I think an immigrant’s life is hard because in Giovanna’s personal essay she says the many difficulties her family and her had when they first came to America.

Quote #1 “As long as I could remember, Da had talked about comin’ to America for a better life”, Margaret Rose, Pg.4
Significance: I chose this quote from the book because in this quote Margaret Rose talks about how her dad, Michael Nolan, wanted to come to America for a better life. This quote says why the characters in this book came to America. I also thought this quote was significant because I thought the reason why Margaret Rose’s dad wanted to come to America was actually to have a better life not just for him but for his family.
Personal Connection: I can connect to this quote because when I came to the United States with all my family, my dad also talked about coming to the United States for a better life. Also I can connect to the story because in the story Margaret Rose talks about her bad trip of coming to America and I also had a bad trip of coming to the United States in a my dad’s car with part of my family.
Question: Did Margaret Rose and her family also want to come to America for a better life?
Quote #2 “From the look of his face, I knew that little Joseph Nolan was not about to become an American. And if he couldn’t I had a gnawin’ fear that none of us could”, Margaret Rose, Pg.17
Significance: I chose this quote because it says the challenge that Margaret Rose and her family face upon their arrival. Margaret Rose and her family had to face that Joseph Nolan had trachoma and that because of that Joseph couldn’t become and American. Joseph not becoming an American meant that someone from Margaret Rose’s family was supposed to go back to Ireland with Joseph. joseph couldn't become an American because the law said that anybody who's got the trachoma doesn't get into America.
Character Judgment: I think I can describe Margaret Rose as a really nice sixteen-year old girl who is grateful to have finally reached America. But I think Margaret Rose’s happiness is shattered when her brother, Joseph, and her dad, Michael, have to go back to Ireland because Joseph has trachoma. I think Margaret Rose is responsible and helps her mom take care of her sisters.
Question: How old was Joseph Nolan?

Reflection
I think an immigrant is a person who comes to a country where they were not born in order to settle there. My connection to immigration is that my parents are both immigrants from different places. Also many of my aunts and uncles from both sides of my parents are immigrants. I do have friends and relatives that are immigrants. Like, as I said before, my parents are immigrants and some people I know are also immigrants. First, immigrants coming to the United States in the 1700s and 1800s were here to explore or to settle the new land. People came to experience economic opportunities, religious freedom, and political freedom. These were mainly European immigrants from places such as England and the Netherlands. I think many immigrants chose to come to the United States for many reasons, such as to live in freedom, to practice their religion freely, to escape poverty or oppression, and to make better lives for themselves and their children. Many immigrants also come to the United States because of employment opportunities. We see many effects of immigration around of San Diego. For example the many cultures around San Diego come from the immigrants that came from different places. Also many Italian, Mexican, or other restaurants that we see probably come from immigrants that immigrated from those places. We also see the effects of immigration around of San Diego in the massive immigration raids at factories, fast-food chains, and neighborhoods.

Book Review of The diary of Anne Frank

The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank
Review by Cristina Michel
The Diary of Anne Frank, the definitive edition, is a really good book about a girl named Anne Frank that wrote a diary, which she named “Kitty,” during World War II. She had to hide because the Germans were capturing all the Jews and sending them to concentration camps. She was hiding at a place she called “The Secret Annex” with her parents, sister, the van Daans, and Mr.Dussel at an office of a building in 263 Prinsengracht, Amsterdam. Anne Frank kept a diary from June 12, 1942 to August 1, 1944. After the war, Anne’s diary was found spread all over the floor in the secret annex by two of her helpers, Miep and Bep. Then it was edited by Anne’s dad, Otto Frank, and later published in hardcover in March 1995. The Diary of Anne Frank, the definitive edition, contains approximately 30 percent more material and is intended to give the reader more insight into the world of Anne Frank.
There were eight people hiding in the secret annex, which were Anne Frank, Margot Frank (Anne’s sister), Otto Frank (Anne’s dad), Edith Frank (Anne’s mom), Mr. Dussel, Peter van Daan, and Mr. and Ms. Van Daan. Anne was a teenage girl that was mature, cheerful, honest, and in love with life. Margarot was a nice, smart, mature, and shy teenage girl. Otto Frank was a patient, optimistic, and sensitive man. Mrs. Van Daan was an annoying, cheerful, selfish, and unintelligent woman. Peter van Daan was a kind, sweet, and sensitive teenage boy.
The eight people hiding in the secret annex had four helpers, who were Bep, Miep, Mr.Kugler, and Mr. Kleiman. They would help the eight people hiding in the secret annex by bringing them food and anything else needed. Anne writes in her diary about all the things that the Germans would do to the Jews, like send them to concentration camps, and how it was like to be hiding. The eight people in the secret annex were hiding in an office of a building in 263 Prinsengracht, Amsterdam.
In The Diary of Anne Frank, Anne tells her diary all her feelings and thoughts that she couldn’t reveal to the people around her, not even her mom. Anne writes in her diary how she likes her dad more than her mom. Even one time Anne wrote that she wouldn’t be sad if her mom died but she would feel really sad if her dad died. In The Diary of Anne Frank, Anne also writes about the rules inside the secret annex. One of them was that you couldn’t open any window (except for the one in the attic) because the neighbors might see them and call the police. Also you couldn’t run any water or go to the bathroom when someone was in the building, like the mailman. At the end, Anne starts writing about the different disagreements in the secret annex (for food) and how everyone would be bored and wanted the war to soon be over. At the middle of the book Anne predicts what is going to happen at the end because she writes, “But who can assure us that this war, which has caused nothing but pain and sorrow, will then be over? And that nothing would have happened to us and our helpers long before that time? No one!” Almost at the end of the book Anne writes an interesting quote about war, “The end of the war still seemed so far away, so unreal, like a fairy tale.”
In conclusion, I thought The Diary of Anne Frank was a really good book, I thought it was interesting, and informative. I would recommend this book to everyone. If you want to know more about Anne’s life and what happen to the eight people hiding in the secret annex read The Diary of Anne Frank.

Blog #9(Chapter 13 Lord of the Flies)
On my Humanities class, we read the classic novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding and after we finish reading it we had to do a writing project. The writing project was to write our own chapter 13 for Lord of the Flies. We could start our chapter 13 just after chapter 12 ended or write it as in the future. I decided to write my chapter 13 just after chapter 12 ended. Here is my chapter 13 for Lord of the Flies:
Chapter 13: Home
The naval officer took all the boys that were on the island to the ship. One by one they got on the ship and sat down quietly looking down. Most of them thought about the things that happen on the island like what happen to Piggy and Simon and the littlun with a mulberry-colored mark on his face. Others thought about what they were going to do when they got home with their families and how their families were going to react. Ralph thought about his friend, Piggy, and how he got killed. Jack thought about his mom and what would happen if she knew what he did on the island. Everyone’s faces seemed shocked by the news that they were rescued. Ralph seem like he wanted to say something, but he was too shocked to even say a word. The naval officer asked the littluns what their name was but some of them did not even remember their names not even Percival.
The naval officer asked all the boys where they were from and some of them said, “We…are from England.”
Then the naval officer asked the boys, “Do any of you know where you live or any information about your parents so that they could know you’re alive?”
All the boys just moved their heads from side to side saying, “No.”
Then the rest of the trip was silent none of the boys said anything to each other or even look at one another.
Once they got to England as soon as the boys got down from the ship all the boys looked at everything. They were surprised to see the houses, the people, and everything else.
They looked at one another and finally a littlun said, “Yes! We are in England back again….we are saved!”
Everyone looked at him and started smiling. Some littluns started crying of happiness.
Then Jack told everybody to gather around in a circle and then he said, “Let’s just not tell anyone what happen on the island not even the naval officer because if we do we are going to get in big trouble and if they ask us if anyone got killed say that three people died of…..of….of…..sickness. Is it clear?”
All the boys said yes and then they just kept on looking amazed at everything. Then suddenly people started coming. Jack looked at a far distance and saw his mom. He ran as fast as he could to hug her while she would just starred at him run. Then they hug one another and they both started crying. All the boys looked at Jack and then Piggy’s auntie came. She was looking for Piggy and then she asked all the boys if they had seen Piggy but nobody would answer her. Then Ralph stood in front of Piggy’s auntie.
Then Piggy’s auntie asked Ralph, “Have you seen my nephew?”
Then Ralph responded, “I am sorry but he…he…died.”
Piggy’s auntie replied, “No….no he can’t be dead,” but then she saw at the seriousness of Ralph’s face and started crying.
Piggy’s auntie said sadly, “Why? Why did he have to die? He was such a nice person. He would never bother anyone. He was such an incredible nephew. Why did he have to die? Why just him and nobody else? He was my nephew.”
Piggy auntie kept on crying until somebody took her home. Then one by one they picked up all the littluns. At last they picked up Ralph; in the way home he would think about Piggy and how his auntie would be happy if he was alive.
At Ralph’s home Ralph’s mom made him his favorite food, which was bread with rice and beans. She would ask him everything about the island but Ralph would not say mostly anything because he remembered what Jack said when they got down from the ship about not telling anybody about what happen on the island or else they would get in big trouble. Ralph was depressed about Piggy’s death. He would remember Piggy and his auntie yelling and crying for Piggy.
At Jack’s home his mom would ask him questions about his time on the island but Jack never answered her. He didn’t want his mom to know what happen on the island. At night Jack had nightmares about the island, the beast, Simon’s death, Piggy’s death, how he torture Sam and Eric and how he killed so much pigs and how he would get happy about killing the pigs. He would remember every little thing that he did since he got to the island in his dreams. He would remember every single word that he would tell Piggy, Ralph, and the others. He would remember his life before going to the island and his life right now. He knew that he had changed a lot so he decided to become a nice young boy.
At the end, Jack became a nice, polite, and a respectful young boy. He would go to school, he would do his homework, and he would obey his mom in everything.
Ralph became also a nice, polite, and a respectful young boy. He was sent to the same school as Jack and they both became nice friends.
The littluns become nice and respectful little boys. Some of them went to the same school and were nice friends.
Nothing was known about Roger some people would say that he moved to another Country but nothing else was heard about him.
Most of the boys’ lives became normal as before they went to the island and even better, but even if they had a good life they never forgot the people that didn’t got a chance to get rescued.

Blog# 8( Chapter 10 and 11 Lord of the Flies)
Chapter 11 and 12: The hunters at the Castle Rock
Piggy’s Journal
I woke up in the morning; it was cold because the fire was not there. I had some difficulties seeing because Jack had my specs but he's going to have and give them to me when I go and yell at him because what is right is right. It’s nice that Ralph is guiding me and helping me so that I do not run into something.
Ralph blew the conch to make an assembly and all of us that were left, and that had not gone to Jack’s tribe, assemble on the beach. At the end of the assembly we decided that our only choice was to travel to the Castle Rock to make Jack and his followers give me back my specs.
I don’t know how Jack is becoming so mean and how he does everything truculently. I mean Simon died and that was his fault for making us say those words, “kill the beast, cut its throat, and spill his blood.” I hope I survive in this island but if I don’t I hope Ralph survives.
We started walking towards the Castle Rock. At Jack’s camp there were guards protecting and they told us that Jack went hunting. Suddenly, Jack and a group of hunters emerged from the forest, dragging a dead pig. Jack and Ralph immediately face off. Ralph tried to explain to Jack the importance of the signal fire so that we could get rescued but Jack would just keep on arguing with Ralph. Samneric, puzzled, looked at one another; while I, reassured by the cessation of violence, stood up carefully. I carefully stood next to a rock, with a sense of delirious abandonment, and leaned all my weight to the lever holding out the talisman, the fragile, shining beauty of the shell. I tried to scream and yell the importance of rules and of been rescued but they would not listen and would keep on their argument.
Suddenly, Roger shoved a massive rock down the mountainside. The boulders stroked me and shatter the conch shell I was holding, that knock me off the mountainside to my death on the rocks below. Now I am death. Ralph after he saw I was death he ran into the jungle and they began to torture Samneric, forcing them to submit to Jack’s authority and to join his tribe.
I saw Ralph trying to escape Jack and his hunters so that he would not get killed by Jack. Ralph escaped to the beach and there he saw a naval officer he was so overwhelmed by the knowledge that he had been rescued. Suddenly, other boys were appearing, with tiny tots, brown, and with distended bellies of small savages. I hope I could be rescued like them but I am dead.
